Oral Thrush

Oral Thrush

Oral thrush in adults is comparatively rare. It is much more likely to be seen in infants, and particularly newborns, who have come into the world with a dose of candida inherited from their mother, or passed on to them in the birth canal. If oral thrush is found in adults, it is a sign that the immune system is seriously depressed. This is why it is most commonly found in cancer and AIDS patients.

Whatever the causes of oral symptoms of thrush, the cure is basically the same for everyone. Steps must be taken to strengthen the immune system. This can be done with a judicious combination of healthy diet that excludes, or seriously limits, sugars and starches, and includes supplements. There are a number of supplements that can be especially helpful in beating candida, the organism responsible for oral thrush, into retreat.

Probiotics and Oral Thrush

Probably the most helpful supplement for cases of oral thrush is a quality probiotic. Probiotics are simply supplements of the helpful organisms that normally live in the body anyway. In cases of depressed immune system, levels of these beneficial flora are nearly always depleted. Once they helpful organisms are lacking, many unhealthy situations can develop within the body, including the overgrowth of candida.

Candida cannot flourish in a system with a healthy immune response and a good level of beneficial flora. If you return your body environment to a healthy balance, candida will return to its benign state, which is a yeast rather than a mycelia-producing fungus. When this happens, symptoms of oral thrush will disappear. If you are treating an infant with probiotics remember that you will need to use smaller doses than those required for an adult.
